Her illness was an aggressive strain of the strep bacteria. Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Egleston placed her on ECMO care for life-saving treatment. The patient was suffering from various organ malfunctions, which included the failure of her kidneys. It was then a regimen of hemodialysis, followed by peritoneal dilution. After an eighteen-day stay in the hospital from the point where she was close to death, and began the long road back to health. Her life had been forever changed. Angelica had completed a one-year dialysis treatment and a half, was now ready to undergo the biggest surgery of all: an organ replacement. Her mother was the one who would donate the kidney. Angelica Hale, along with her mother had the transplant of a kidney on the premises of Emory University Hospital in Atlanta as well as Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Egleston on September 13th 2013.
